Have a laugh on me

We're not all in the same boat, some of us struggle to even get in the boat!

I detest doing dishes.

No that’s not quite right, I DESPISE them.

If I had my way our family would eat off plastic/paper plates, cups and utensils – EVERY DAY.

That is if they were cheap and weren’t made out of plastic and therefore destined to spend 100’s of years in landfills slowly destroying our already fragile earth.

I dread meal times because I know once they’re over I have a bench and sink full of dirty dishes to clean up.

Preparing and cooking three meals a day is painful enough, as is sitting down to meals with kids who are fussy, messy and noisy eaters.

If you hadn’t already figured it out, I’m no domestic goddess.

I used to be amazingly tidy before kids, but then there were only two of us, and we made all our mess at work!

I often rope the Husband into doing them, but he’s slow, loud, doesn’t use enough detergent, plus I know I’ll do a much better job.

I’m sure there’s a lot wives out there that think like this and like me are smart enough not to verbalise this to their partners.

Just in case you wondered, I do have a dishwasher but plastics, oven trays, and our ‘good’ knives are not allowed to go in there.

And if the Husband catches me putting the cheese grater or good knives in there I’m in trouble.

However, when he’s not looking I have been known to shove in an entire roasting dish on the top rack.

It takes up the whole space but I don’t give a shit because I HATE DISHES!

Soon we’re going camping, or cabining (not sure this is a word but you catch my drift) and I’m SO packing paper plates.

And because I have no shame in admitting I’m a big fat lazy pants when it comes to dishes, I shared this idea with my friends and they’re doing the same thing!

It will also free up our time for more important things, which I don’t even need to spell out – but I will – W.I.N.E.

I like to think of it as a smart move not a lazy one.

This (see below) is what I have to tackle after I finish blogging about dishes. (Man my life is boring)

And for those observant ones out there, see the cheese grater? I’m so putting that in the dishwasher tonight, what a rebel eh?

Just as an aside, I was searching google for stock photos of a really messy kitchen to post and the search words I used were:

“Pile of dishes huge” – perhaps not my finest hour, but I thought they were reasonably good words to plug in.

And check out the image that came up in the search results!!!!

Not exactly what I was after, but definitely a dish!

Perhaps I could ask him to clean up my kitchen.

I bet he’d use the right amount of detergent!

Author: Have A Laugh On Me

I'm a mum to three, write from home and I rarely cook, craft or clean but admire those who do. I try to live by the mantra that there's no point in worrying about something that might not happen! Be warned this is not a fluffy, sweet mummy blog, rather a place where you can cringe, laugh and be shocked at my brutally honest take on my life.

  1. When I was a teen it was my job to stack the dishwasher and then wash up any dishes that didn’t fit. I was the queen of getting shit to fit. My philosophy was that if the rotors spun then it was good to go. If one of the roasting pans didn’t fit then I’d ‘soak’ them and get out of it all together. Somehow my mother never clued into this….

  2. I bet we wouldn’t even notice if her didn’t use the enough detergent. I hate dishes as well. At least I did until I had a dishwasher. What I fought against one for so long I will never know. Please don’t let my husband hear me say that though

  3. Yep, washing up totally sucks. We don’t even have a dishwasher now. We used to have one and not only could you not put everything in there, but it didn’t wash very well. I still want to get a better one eventually when we make it to our McMansion in Boganville Heights. On second thought forget the dishwasher, I’ll take that hunky dude instead lol

  4. I’ll take that pile of huge dishes anytime 😉
OMG I laos detest the aftermath of a cooked meal and I have three messy boys as well. I stick whatever I can in the dishwasher…always try and buy things that can go in the dishwasher. When I move and have my favourite all-time dishwasher back, the cheese grater will definitely be going back in as will all the knives etc. The dishwasher we have here in the rental property isn’yt so great so have to be a bit more careful what I stick in there.

  5. We have a dishwasher but same as you there’s a whole bunch of non-dishwasher friendly items. Some days I wonder why we even have the dishwasher when so many things we own still have to be hand washed. I absolutely loathe it when the hand-washing dishes are left on the side for the next day, hubby does the cleaning but always seems to skip this because he knows I’m likely to do them myself!

  6. That counter looks pretty normal for our house too. We have a dishwasher but don’t use it. I cook, hubby does the dishes…I have it all sorted ha ha..

  7. Looks familiar 😉 Though we did inherit a dishwasher when we bought the house, it has never worked properly, and I guess I’m too much of a tightarse to get it fixed. Goes all day and all night. I blast some music sometimes, that helps make washing up less painful.

  8. When are you going cabining? Are you going back to Fingal? I am all for plastic too, especially in those situations anyway! I’m glad we use the dishwasher in this place, we didn’t in the old one, but Mike always helped me with them.

  9. Anything and everything goes well in the dishwasher. And if it doesn’t – who cares?!

  10. I have only had a dishwasher for the last year or so and I seriously don’t know how I managed without one for so many years. They are awesome. I get in trouble too for putting the ‘good’ things in as well but I’m a rebel too and do it anyway – I don’t particularly enjoy having to handwash when I don’t have to! Thanks again for linking up Em!

  11. Man, he wouldn’t have to use any detergent! He could just put them all away dirty and I wouldn’t mind a bit! lol

I so want a dishwasher of the electrical variety. The four teenage ones I have don’t do a proper job. The slow cooker, to saucepan lids and coffee cups are still sitting on the sink. Apparently they finished the dishes *sigh*
