So if you haven’t heard Generation Y is going to come of age and rule the world!
I’m a little miffed at this really – not being one of those born between 1981 and 1994.
I recently interviewed a senior consultant for a global recruitment company and she said Gen Y’ers are the duck’s nuts – well not in those exact words but you catch my drift.
She was saying this in the context of employment – not in regards to their music taste or sense of fashion.
Anyway my contact wasn’t speaking out of her ass – research has proven she is in fact right – Gen Y are kinda the shiz right now and supposedly employers would be MAD not to hire them!
This what she has to say about these young bucks!
1. They are by far the most educated and well-rounded generation in the workforce today.
(I agree with the well-rounded part – just sayin’ Gen Y’ers have always had fast-food outlets)
2. Gen Y’ers are a privileged lot who grew up with a sense of entitlement.
(Spoiled brats you mean)
3. They are smart and they know it.
(Smarty pants more like – and crack-flashing short ones at that)
4. Their confidence is often mistaken for cockiness, while their ideas and enthusiasm are seen as being anti-establishment or challenging the status quo.
(I can do cocky – okay that just sounds all sorts of wrong)
5. Technology plays such a big part in their lives but it means that they are dependent on technology.
(Umm dir aren’t we all now?)
6. The fact remains – Gen Y’ers are here to say and will rule the world.
(No shit – unless they all get infected by something that is spread by being addicted to smartphones)
7. Employers should not expect Gen Y hires to stay – its just too un-cool for them – plus they know they have bright prospects someplace else.
(I can’t even think of a cool retort for this – I’m so Gen X right now :()
8. Gen Y’ers have creativity and boundless energy and provide value for money for any organisation.
(Well if you consider getting energy from a green shiny tin or white powder – yes okay I’ve give you that one)
So congrats Gen Y – I’m not worthy – now get off your phone/computer and get back to work.
Are you Gen X, Y or Z, and do you agree with these generalisations?
Or have you employed a Gen Y’er? And would they be your first choice?

I love it! I fall out of the Gen X too, I am so old! From TUST
February 22, 2013 at 11:28 am
But so wise I’m sure 😉
February 21, 2013 at 2:06 pm
Hilarious. Although, I have to say I think I would’ve made a hot shiz gen Y hipster. All that drinking out recycled jam jars, pasty white skin and thrift shop clothes. Oh, but wait, gen X did all that, but we called it grunge x
February 22, 2013 at 11:29 am
SO TRUE! I loved grunge era and had the dark green doc marten boots to prove it – wish I hadn’t sold them 😦
February 21, 2013 at 3:29 pm
That may be true but they still have the worse taste in fashion! Nobody wants to see your butt cheeks around the grocery isles in Woolies mkay?!
February 22, 2013 at 11:30 am
I’m with you Michelle – surely it’s nice to leave something to the imagination
February 21, 2013 at 3:41 pm
I am so with you! I’m devastated! I thought it was going to be Gen x that was going to rule the world – whats 5 years anyway!
Thanks for linking up with #TUST

I actually think we will be the ones behind the scenes doing all the hard work while Gen X gets all the glory xx
February 21, 2013 at 3:44 pm
Umm, I’m gen Y!! Only just though! Never fear…….. I don’t have the legs for the short pants!
February 22, 2013 at 12:06 pm
Hee hee – I’m only a few years off also – this probably applies more to those born closer to 1994 🙂
February 21, 2013 at 4:00 pm
I’m Gen Y, but at the end that means technology baffles me too. And I have never worn shorts that short (a.k.a. denim undies). Okay, maybe when I was 13. When I had legs to die for and my mum actually bought them for me. Definitely not now.
February 22, 2013 at 12:07 pm
I gotta say I did wear short shorts and still do – but not that short – I’m keeping what I had for breakfast to myself 😉 x
February 21, 2013 at 6:20 pm
Hilarious. I am a 1980 person. So on the cusp, if you will. I think I only fall into one of these categories – addicted to smart phone! I have a love/hate thing going on with it. Bloody interweb.
February 22, 2013 at 12:08 pm
Me too – I can’t live with it or without it. I mean we grew up without them and turned out fine right? x
February 21, 2013 at 6:26 pm
Yes they are going to rule the world, so look out. A senior Professor at a WA University in WA say’s she is afraid for us, with that generation having control. (or no control) I don’t agree with her, I think social media, FB, Twitter, it’s just all out there in the open now as their actions, thoughts and attitudes weren’t at the forefront before, or talked about as much, as there weren’t the social apps, technology, awareness that we have now. (aside from not being able to discipline anymore) You have the good and the bad like any generation. Those shorts are just plain stupid. xx Rae
February 22, 2013 at 12:09 pm
I agree the world is much more transparent now and so are people. However it also means people can present an online persona that does not reflect who they are at all and this can be alarming! Thanks for visiting and commenting Rae 🙂
February 21, 2013 at 8:43 pm
Haha I’m so sick of their awful shorts too, none of them seem to have figures that look any good in them. and yes get back to work is about right 😉
February 22, 2013 at 12:10 pm
It’s on par with obvious muffin cakes – I’ve got one but you don’t see mine out for the world to see x
February 21, 2013 at 9:07 pm
I’m an 88 baby so smack in the middle. I agree with a lot of the generlisations of our generation though. At least for the ones that have always had ‘smart’ technology. Which isn’t always a good thing. I can’t do maths without a caculator to save myself.
February 22, 2013 at 12:11 pm
That’s interesting to know Tegan – see my kids will be like that, have no clue how to do long division etc, but then again who needs it really – as long as they can do the basics without technology. x
February 22, 2013 at 7:08 am
God help us all is all I have to say! What generation are our kids? The i-Gen? They all want to make big bucks for doing nothing! How is that creative and well-rounded?
February 22, 2013 at 12:12 pm
I know I can’t even think too far ahead for our kids – as long as we teach them how to cope without technology then hopefully they’ll be okay because one day we might lose it – imagine that – no internet!
February 22, 2013 at 8:34 am
Hmmm hubster and I are Gen X; Mr 18 is a Gen Y; and Miss 16 is a Milennium Baby. I haven’t really had enough to do with Gen Y in the workforce to comment, except to say that nobody touches MY awesomeness!!!!
February 22, 2013 at 12:13 pm
I’ve worked with a lot of Gen Y’ers and what this recruiter said makes sense, they are like that. And yep you totally rock Mrs Redlands 🙂
February 22, 2013 at 8:47 am
Congrats on being fYBF featured blogger! Trying out commenting from my iPad and hope it works!
Anyway I know a certain blogger ( looking at you Mama Grace!) that will give up sex for flogging the blog, does that count as Gen-Yish? Hahaha
February 22, 2013 at 12:14 pm
Hi Ai – I got it without having to scoop it out of my spam folder 🙂 And yes you’re right, Grace did say she was a no-go zone on Fridays, hee hee. xx
February 22, 2013 at 9:38 am
I am Gen Y, and I wish I did have boundless energy. I just turned 30, no kids & still feel like shit.
February 22, 2013 at 4:46 pm
I’m a Gen Xer and I think we are the pick of the current generations – just see how well Gen X did on Talkin About My Generation on Channel 10 – we get the best of both worlds, we understand technology yet usually stick around at a job for more than 5 minutes!
February 24, 2013 at 8:07 pm
Staying with a job thing is a bit tell tale sign. I didn’t see that show – but us Gen X’ers are much more amazeballs 🙂 x
February 22, 2013 at 5:37 pm
Well I’m well and truly Gen X and we’re awesome, of course. But I reckon the distinguishing feature of Gen Y is really just ‘youth’. Every generation is considered anti-establishment, fresh, energetic, naively confident, entitled, better educated etc when they’re the emerging cohort – and it’s the generation just ahead of them who usually gives them the labels. Those shorts will surely be their downfall though 😉
February 24, 2013 at 8:05 pm
You’re a wise woman, I could not agree more – we always doubt those coming behind us because we like to think that WE are the best generation. And yep those shorts and worse than the wide belts I used to wear when I was young 🙂
February 22, 2013 at 6:11 pm
I just scrape in there! Thanks for your hilarious translations! I lost my iPhone last week- and am struggling.
February 24, 2013 at 8:04 pm
I’d totally struggle without my phone – despite the fact I bag out the Y’ers!! But don’t tell anyone 🙂
February 22, 2013 at 6:14 pm
Love that shot of you across the strap, it’s infectious (as in makes me want to shake my hair all over the room as opposed to disease,) I totally agree with you. Gen Ys (while I love everybody – disclaimer) can be um a little self entitled. Being a crusty old xer, stuck in the 80s, im still waiting for the boomer to get out of the seat so we can have a turn. No way am I gunna let a fresh-faced enthusiastic multitasking gen y jump the queue!
February 24, 2013 at 8:01 pm
And good on you – why should they get all the glory after doing not much work for it?!
The strap is kinda funny – as just the top part, the rest is me jumping up like a muppet – gotta love being silly! xx
February 22, 2013 at 8:23 pm
So funny- I missed being a baby boomer ….thank goodness – GEN Y – are one of a kind.
February 24, 2013 at 8:03 pm
They sure are, I’ve worked with a few and it was a real eye opener 🙂
February 22, 2013 at 9:16 pm
Is that a new header? Love it!
Oh goodness Gen Y annoy me. But I don’t think they are any different from any other young generation coming up through the ranks in decades gone by.
But I’m hanging for the Baby Boomers to retire and move into retirement homes and create a housing crash so I can buy up a gorgeous property at stinking cheap prices. Maybe that’s wishful thinking…
February 24, 2013 at 7:59 pm
Hee hee yes it is a new banner, only the top off, the bottom is me doing a silly jump-up pose but can fit the top.
And you are so right about any generation rising through, they always seem so much less motivated, committed etc, I’m sure my parents think the same of all those that are born after them!
xx
February 22, 2013 at 11:16 pm
I’m an older Gen-Y pretty much on the cusp but I’m a manager of a retail store targeted at Gen-Y and have all Gen-Y staff. It was obvious over the Christmas period where I had a huge influx of Christmas casuals start that that the work ethic of Gen-Y is hit or miss. It was a pretty straight 50/50 split of staff who worked their backsides off and those who thought it was a cool place to hang out and get paid. Obviously the latter didn’t have their contracts renewed after jan 1st.
February 24, 2013 at 7:57 pm
That’s really interesting and spot on. I think it’s too simplistic to tar all with the same brush. We are all individuals and some Gen Y’ers obviously know the value of money and hard work! Thanks for visiting and commenting! Emily
February 23, 2013 at 8:25 am
Thanks for linking up with Eat.Pray.Love. I’m thinking she may need to Eat something herself?
February 24, 2013 at 7:27 pm
I’m 37, so I don’t even know if I’m a letter. 🙂
I must be getting crotchety too, because I find Gen Xers to be a spoiled, entitled bunch. And not in a good way.
February 24, 2013 at 7:33 pm
Ha ha you’re a Gen X like me! Closer to 40 than 30 and rocking it! It’s their attitude I sometimes battle with, respect has to be earned, not demanded! Thanks for visiting and comment.
February 24, 2013 at 8:18 pm
I am an Xer too. I’ve already hit the 40 mark!!!! Now I’m wondering what generation are kids are? Off to google it.
February 25, 2013 at 11:26 am
It’s so bizarre and a little scary thinking about what the world will be like in 2050 and our children are our age. x
February 24, 2013 at 8:25 pm
Harumph, the youth of today… bloody don’t deserve to be young.
I was totally horrified to realise that I’m considered a babyboomer, the last of them I think, was born in 1964 (an excellent vintage.)
Shouldn’t I be thinking about retirement rather than the re-tiring efforts requered to get the terrible twins to school – they’s nearly 7??
Think I’m a would-be Gen X… anyway, come the revolution….
February 25, 2013 at 11:27 am
You boomer you – great vintage for sure Seana!
I’m dreading the days when my kids don’t want to go to school – so far they are in the honeymoon period 🙂
February 25, 2013 at 8:46 am
Sorry can’t get past the short shorts – so high one would have to wax their eyebrows to wear them!
February 25, 2013 at 11:30 am
Ha, thanks for the laugh! Aren’t they horrid? 🙂 xx
February 26, 2013 at 5:46 am
I’m around the X/Y cusp, and I find I identify much more with gen X than genY. Until genX start talking about some pop culture reference I’m too young to understand. Then I think maybe I AM a young, hip genY kid. Until I hang out with one, and say the word “totes” in conversation, and they laugh at me. *sigh* I’m a genXYer, I guess… 😉
February 28, 2013 at 12:43 pm
You are totally Gen Xing right now. But in many ways I have to agree and blowing smoke up their arse is not helping their plight 🙂
