So if you haven’t heard Generation Y is going to come of age and rule the world!
I’m a little miffed at this really – not being one of those born between 1981 and 1994.
I recently interviewed a senior consultant for a global recruitment company and she said Gen Y’ers are the duck’s nuts – well not in those exact words but you catch my drift.
She was saying this in the context of employment – not in regards to their music taste or sense of fashion.

Anyway my contact wasn’t speaking out of her ass – research has proven she is in fact right – Gen Y are kinda the shiz right now and supposedly employers would be MAD not to hire them!
This what she has to say about these young bucks!
1. They are by far the most educated and well-rounded generation in the workforce today.
(I agree with the well-rounded part – just sayin’ Gen Y’ers have always had fast-food outlets)
2. Gen Y’ers are a privileged lot who grew up with a sense of entitlement.
(Spoiled brats you mean)
3. They are smart and they know it.
(Smarty pants more like – and crack-flashing short ones at that)
4. Their confidence is often mistaken for cockiness, while their ideas and enthusiasm are seen as being anti-establishment or challenging the status quo.
(I can do cocky – okay that just sounds all sorts of wrong)
5. Technology plays such a big part in their lives but it means that they are dependent on technology.
(Umm dir aren’t we all now?)
6. The fact remains – Gen Y’ers are here to say and will rule the world.
(No shit – unless they all get infected by something that is spread by being addicted to smartphones)

7. Employers should not expect Gen Y hires to stay – its just too un-cool for them – plus they know they have bright prospects someplace else.
(I can’t even think of a cool retort for this – I’m so Gen X right now :()
8. Gen Y’ers have creativity and boundless energy and provide value for money for any organisation.
(Well if you consider getting energy from a green shiny tin or white powder – yes okay I’ve give you that one)
So congrats Gen Y – I’m not worthy – now get off your phone/computer and get back to work.

I’m Gen Y, but at the end that means technology baffles me too. And I have never worn shorts that short (a.k.a. denim undies). Okay, maybe when I was 13. When I had legs to die for and my mum actually bought them for me. Definitely not now.

Yes they are going to rule the world, so look out. A senior Professor at a WA University in WA say’s she is afraid for us, with that generation having control. (or no control) I don’t agree with her, I think social media, FB, Twitter, it’s just all out there in the open now as their actions, thoughts and attitudes weren’t at the forefront before, or talked about as much, as there weren’t the social apps, technology, awareness that we have now. (aside from not being able to discipline anymore) You have the good and the bad like any generation. Those shorts are just plain stupid. xx Rae

I’m an 88 baby so smack in the middle. I agree with a lot of the generlisations of our generation though. At least for the ones that have always had ‘smart’ technology. Which isn’t always a good thing. I can’t do maths without a caculator to save myself.

I know I can’t even think too far ahead for our kids – as long as we teach them how to cope without technology then hopefully they’ll be okay because one day we might lose it – imagine that – no internet!

I’m a Gen Xer and I think we are the pick of the current generations – just see how well Gen X did on Talkin About My Generation on Channel 10 – we get the best of both worlds, we understand technology yet usually stick around at a job for more than 5 minutes!

Well I’m well and truly Gen X and we’re awesome, of course. But I reckon the distinguishing feature of Gen Y is really just ‘youth’. Every generation is considered anti-establishment, fresh, energetic, naively confident, entitled, better educated etc when they’re the emerging cohort – and it’s the generation just ahead of them who usually gives them the labels. Those shorts will surely be their downfall though 😉

Love that shot of you across the strap, it’s infectious (as in makes me want to shake my hair all over the room as opposed to disease,) I totally agree with you. Gen Ys (while I love everybody – disclaimer) can be um a little self entitled. Being a crusty old xer, stuck in the 80s, im still waiting for the boomer to get out of the seat so we can have a turn. No way am I gunna let a fresh-faced enthusiastic multitasking gen y jump the queue!

Oh goodness Gen Y annoy me. But I don’t think they are any different from any other young generation coming up through the ranks in decades gone by.
But I’m hanging for the Baby Boomers to retire and move into retirement homes and create a housing crash so I can buy up a gorgeous property at stinking cheap prices. Maybe that’s wishful thinking…

I’m an older Gen-Y pretty much on the cusp but I’m a manager of a retail store targeted at Gen-Y and have all Gen-Y staff. It was obvious over the Christmas period where I had a huge influx of Christmas casuals start that that the work ethic of Gen-Y is hit or miss. It was a pretty straight 50/50 split of staff who worked their backsides off and those who thought it was a cool place to hang out and get paid. Obviously the latter didn’t have their contracts renewed after jan 1st.

Harumph, the youth of today… bloody don’t deserve to be young.
I was totally horrified to realise that I’m considered a babyboomer, the last of them I think, was born in 1964 (an excellent vintage.)
Shouldn’t I be thinking about retirement rather than the re-tiring efforts requered to get the terrible twins to school – they’s nearly 7??
Think I’m a would-be Gen X… anyway, come the revolution….

I’m around the X/Y cusp, and I find I identify much more with gen X than genY. Until genX start talking about some pop culture reference I’m too young to understand. Then I think maybe I AM a young, hip genY kid. Until I hang out with one, and say the word “totes” in conversation, and they laugh at me. *sigh* I’m a genXYer, I guess… 😉
