Eat your heart out Thermomix crusaders – I’m bringing the beater back! YEAH!
For those who aren’t familiar with the Thermomix – be proud ashamed, be VERY proud ashamed.
Here it is, in all it’s $2000 (give or take) glory!
For someone like me, a writer, this device would be the equivalent of me having a minion to take notes while I spoke, to interview boring people, do research on the internet and then present me with all the info.
All that would be left for me to do was press a button and VOILA an amazing article would appear.
Basically you have to do FUG ALL and you get a shit-hot baking product!
But alas I am not one of the privileged few who owns one, nor will I likely EVER be gifted one to write a review about.
So I thought I’d go retro and make cupcakes with… wait for it…. an electric beater!
The aim was to hide three large zucchinis in them, like I do with risotto and spag bol!
I LOVE ZUCCHINIS!
No need to bore you with a description of how I made them, but here is a pictorial of my baking adventure.
I’m starting to wonder if I have missed my calling? Am I perhaps destined to be a FOOD BLOGGER after all?
Have you got any other tips to hiding veges in food?
Nah just kidding I don’t care, I only bake once a year and I’ve done my dash for 2013!
A rather wordless IBOT – but they say a picture paints a thousands words!
WAIT – don’t got!!!
I’m GUEST BLOGGING over for Kylie @ A Study of Contradictions – LOVE LOVE her blog, the fact she can rant and swear like a pro while being super intelligent!

lol I am a Thermomix free zone as well. In fact I just treated myself to a new beater last week. $12.95 from Woolies. Thermomix that bitches!
August 20, 2013 at 8:42 pm
BOOM – what a bargain! Love us retro bitches! x
August 20, 2013 at 8:07 am
Beater all the way, here! I’d rather go on a holiday than own a thermomix! WEll done on getting your kids to eat zucchini cupcakes! Perhaps I should try this with Nick.
August 20, 2013 at 8:44 pm
I hear you – it’s a lot of money, could be spent on our mortgage! In saying that I’m sure it’s bloody fantastic so I suppose I’m just jealous that I’m not swimming in money so can’t have one to cook some great shit for me! Cupcakes GREAT idea, he won’t even know, just make sure you peel them and puree x
August 20, 2013 at 8:17 am
I think you and me need to have a thermomix-free cook off!!! LMAO! You in? xx
August 20, 2013 at 8:44 pm
No way you’d totally kick my butt, I’d have to like spike you cuppa or something so you get all wonky and I win!! š x
August 20, 2013 at 8:46 am
Great job disguising those zucchinis!! I love how you are cooking retro style and enjoying the taste of the beaters! I mix everything with a bar mixer, so for me it’s muffin cocktails!!
August 20, 2013 at 8:45 pm
I love your style – what a fab idea! Thanks for visit x
August 20, 2013 at 8:49 am
Love it. You sound like a domestic goddess compared to me. No thermomix to be found here either. They are so (beeping) expensive!!
I do make a zucchini slice…which has plenty of veges in it and the boys eat it. Sort of like a quiche without the pastry. Not that you care lol.
August 20, 2013 at 8:46 pm
I wonder if my kids would eat that?! (not that I care, but I do!!!!) DEFINITELY not a domestic goddess, ummm I made them from a packet, but SHSSSS don’t tell anyone!
August 20, 2013 at 8:52 am
Hahaha – I love that you’re bragging about not having a thermomix! Don’t you know … anybody who is ANYbody has a thermomix! Well, not me. I’ve got the oldest set of beaters known to man … and I do like the idea of Zucchini cupcakes. Cheers, Alison
August 20, 2013 at 8:47 pm
Yes Al, I’m loving being a nobody when it comes to cooking, although I’d love one, but to me it’s not an investment, eg can’t make money out of it so why have one?! š x
August 20, 2013 at 8:56 am
Cracker Emily! What a great job hiding veggies! Thankfully for us no veggie hiding required, the boy loves veggies!
August 20, 2013 at 8:47 pm
You know my kids LOVE veggies too but I’m always looking for ways to make them eat MORE MORE MORE! Em š
August 20, 2013 at 9:20 am
You can’t beat the ol’ beaters! There is no other way to get into every nook and cranny, be able to tip the bowl, and spray the cupboards! No thermomix here either, but I do plead guilty to other kitchen appliances that may or may not make life easier š
August 20, 2013 at 8:48 pm
OH MY GAWD, funny, as I did accidentally spray the splashback!! Ha Ha. I’m all for appliances, I have a Nepresso so maybe I should shut the hell up!
August 20, 2013 at 9:43 am
We house sat for a family with a theromix, and I made her hid it before they left, incase we broke it. We did eat their thermomix creations tho…mango ice cream – amazing!
August 20, 2013 at 8:49 pm
YUMMO that sounds divine! Mango ice cream! I am yet to place my eyes on one in person, but I can’t wait – NOT!
August 20, 2013 at 11:33 am
I’m living without a Thermomix too! Great job on hiding veges in the cupcakes though.. genius!
Ai @ Sakura Haruka
August 20, 2013 at 8:49 pm
Hey lovely I got both comments, feeling the LURVE! xx
August 20, 2013 at 11:34 am
test test.. left a comment earlier but think it got eaten up ;p
Anyway genius idea on adding vegs to cupcakes!!
Ai @ Sakura Haruka
August 20, 2013 at 8:49 pm
The more the better when it comes to greens I reckon Ai x
August 20, 2013 at 12:15 pm
I had heard of a thermomix but had never seen one – holy shit!
I love zucchinis too.
August 20, 2013 at 8:50 pm
They are amazing things Sam, but not for those on a writer’s income – ha ha š x
August 20, 2013 at 12:23 pm
Nothing wrong with the good old hand beater! I recently got a kitchen aid mixer and I feel useless just standing there watching it mix so I end up getting the beaters out. And they are much easier to lick too.
August 20, 2013 at 8:50 pm
Oh Jods, enjoy feeling useless – I think those are up there – so you’re a Kitchen Aid gal – good to know, good to know š xx
August 20, 2013 at 12:28 pm
What kind of person licks BOTH beaters Em? Shouldn’t you be sharing you big old meanie??
August 20, 2013 at 8:51 pm
A very selfish, weight gaining person who had no kids around otherwise they would have seen me put in the GREENS! xx
August 20, 2013 at 8:55 pm
Ahh – our veggie smuggling techniques diverge there! x
August 20, 2013 at 2:51 pm
LMAO – I am a thermomix-less person too, actually don’t want one. I did have a moment of “Wait, can you do that? Can I really just chuck the whole zucchini in? …” You clever little tricky minx you!
August 20, 2013 at 8:51 pm
Glad I got you Lis š
August 20, 2013 at 2:54 pm
also gonna add that I never hide vegies in food like this.. I hate surprises like that… when your mum tells you fifteen years later that the “soft chicken” was actually tripe. WTF.. wrong!!! No surprises in my house. If you are vegies it will be obvious that you are eating vegies
August 20, 2013 at 8:52 pm
My kids actually LOVE eating rare veggies but I thought that it couldn’t hurt to shove some more in when they weren’t looking! As for tripe that is just WRONG BURGER hun!! x
August 20, 2013 at 3:07 pm
Would you believe, I don’t even use an electric mixer, dinosaur that I am! I just beat with a spoon, unless it’s whipping cream, then I’ll break out the $8 electric mixer.
As fabulous as a Thermo sounds, I just couldn’t justify. xx
August 20, 2013 at 8:53 pm
My mum used to use a hand beater, you know those wheel ones that spin around, for whipped cream? They are old school for sure. Nothing wrong with being a dinosaur, you’d have to be a long-neck though, a gentle one that doesn’t eat or kill meat š xx
August 20, 2013 at 4:09 pm
Excellent work! Who needs a Thermomix anyway! Pah! Rock on hand held beaters!
August 20, 2013 at 8:54 pm
I still can’t get over how MUCH they cost!!! Talk about daylight robbery !
August 20, 2013 at 5:40 pm
On some days I disguise their veggies in whatever way I can. On other days I give up, and let them eat (or not eat) whatever they want. Turns out they are growing like shooting rockets anyway. Seems my cooking has nothing to do with it. God help our food bill when these boys get older!
August 20, 2013 at 8:55 pm
I am quite worried about our food bill as my boys grow too J – that is half the reason I thought I’d try and start baking, well once a year anyhow š xx
August 20, 2013 at 5:41 pm
I don’t own a thermomix either, or even a … food processor. Totally retro here. Although, today I had an insinkerator partially installed. According to the plumber, I now need an electrician- it’s not in the current budget… so I now I have an insinkerator with a sink that is unusable!
August 20, 2013 at 8:56 pm
SNAP, no food processor here, but probably because I don’t cook enough to warrant one! Love that you have an insinkerator, haven’t seen one of them for years, used to be quite the thing back in the day – here’s to getting a spunky sparky on the job ASAP š
August 20, 2013 at 5:45 pm
Sweet! I have recently discovered the joys of the good old sunbeam beater and it’s SO much easier than mixing by hand! great work on the dreaded veggie hiding – I suppose zuchini would be good to use because it is a mild taste – or is that completely wrong and I”m an idiot!
August 20, 2013 at 8:57 pm
You are right Em – once you peel and puree them (but drain the juice before adding to batter) they are colourless and even tasteless – BEST THING EVER to smuggle into food š x
August 20, 2013 at 7:06 pm
Nice work Em – these look great & I love your cooking style! š
No Thermomix here either – though I will admit to a fleeting want – just because I am such a kitchen gadget geek! Then I looked into them & went, nah … I have all I need to do that stuff & get messy doing it, which is half the fun!! Plus $2K – pfft, tell ’em they’re dreamin’!!!
Oh & btw, I think you are extra-frickin’ awesome because I know it must bore you stupid to read my posts, given my foodie focus, but you do read it & you take the time to comment & I am ever so grateful! Thank you for the laughs & the kindness – it does not go unnoticed! Can’t wait to share a drink or two with you at problogger just to say cheers & thanks!! š
August 20, 2013 at 8:59 pm
I actually DO enjoy your posts because they aren’t boring, and funnily enough I do appreciate all the hard work that goes into them, I suppose I’m slightly jealous and feel bad that I’m not so great in the ole’ kitchen department, but best I stick to writing probably!
And your posts ARE NOT stupid, shame on you for saying that Jods – they are great.
AND AND AND BOOM to Problogger, a drink or three here we go š xxxx
August 20, 2013 at 7:35 pm
Forget the baking and Thermomix, lets start a wine blog? You in?
August 20, 2013 at 8:59 pm
Does a bear shit in the woods? (don’t answer that teacher – it’s a rhetorical q!)
I’m a starter for shiz!
August 20, 2013 at 8:20 pm
Thanks for the 101 on thermo mixers. I go into dolphin mode when people talk about them. Are they really $2000? How can people afford them? Zucchini muffins look great. I tried carrot and pineapple ones once but they went down like a tonne of bricks …
August 20, 2013 at 9:01 pm
Love your term, dolphin mode, I might start using it – but will credit you for sure!
And yes they are that much, I suppose for those foodies who use a lot they can justify.
Zucchini is the way to go Ren, truly, just peel, puree and dump in the mixture of whatever you are making, drain juice out first so they set better – do it and then BLOG ABOUT IT – xxx š x
August 20, 2013 at 9:20 pm
I make a beetroot chocolate cake that is seriously yum! It tastes just like a mud cake but without all of the heaviness. I went to a thermomix demo last year and while it was impressive I won’t be rushing out to buy one anytime soon. That would involve me actually using the kitchen…
August 20, 2013 at 10:02 pm
That is a good idea, the ole’ beet root! I don’t have the means or opportunity to get a Thermomix and if I had the means I’d go on holiday instead! x
August 20, 2013 at 9:23 pm
I am proudly a Thermomix free zone! Personally, I think there are dozens of other things I’d rather spend $2,000 on. Shoes, handbags…you know, REALLY practical stuff š
August 20, 2013 at 10:03 pm
Yes I hear you G – I same goes with me, stuff like a trip overseas, tickets to BDO and all that VERY crucial stuff š 4 weeks and counting – BOOM!
August 20, 2013 at 9:33 pm
Hubby does most of the serious cooking here, so I just do the fun stuff. But I do tend to hide vegies in my cakes too. The kids still love them…
August 20, 2013 at 10:03 pm
You are uber lucky D – my hubby ain’t no cooker but thankfully he’s a looker!!! x
August 20, 2013 at 9:39 pm
High five for the beater usage woman! I’m old skool like that too, none of this fancy schmancy thermal undie garbage!
You never fail to make me giggle. I kind of felt like there was some hidden innuendo in all that “hide the zucchini” speak… xx
August 20, 2013 at 10:04 pm
Thank goodness there is someone else out there with a great dirty mind like mine – BOOM! I was kinda hoping someone else got that – so far you are it – love yah! š xx
August 20, 2013 at 9:46 pm
So much cleverer than a handmade sandwich š
August 20, 2013 at 10:05 pm
LOL – OH SOOOOO much cleverererererer Jess – thanks for visit spunknut! x
August 20, 2013 at 9:56 pm
Gosh you are hilarious! I don’t have a thermomix and I’m still doing all the cooking and I’m even enjoying it! That third picture is priceless!
August 20, 2013 at 10:06 pm
I do all the cooking, just because I’m probably better at it – thanks for visit lovely lady š xx
August 20, 2013 at 10:15 pm
Retro bitch here too, beater all the way baby! Loved your guest blog too! I had three under two at one stage so was nodding my head remembering the insanity š
August 20, 2013 at 10:20 pm
Wow you are incredible having three so young, a great mumma you are! Thanks for visit š
August 20, 2013 at 10:17 pm
I don’t have one either though I secretly covet one – I cannot justify it just for sorbet. Love the zucchini cupcakes mmmmm
August 20, 2013 at 10:21 pm
Yes it’s a far whack of cash in the scheme of things! Zucchini is my new fav veggie – I put it in everything! x
August 21, 2013 at 12:34 am
I have to out myself – I am a thermomix owner – seems I am the only one that has commented so far – where are they all hiding????!!!!! I love my thermie – but you sure as hell can’t lick them beaters š
August 21, 2013 at 6:18 am
Yes I wonder why no who has one has commented? I know the thermie’s are probably fantastic and of course I meant no offence!! Thanks for visit! š
August 21, 2013 at 8:10 pm
That looks yum! Must say I keep hearing a lot about the thermomix but don’t have one. No room and well, for one person, not much sense! By the way, when this post arrived in my inbox yesterday, I cracked up at the title! Thanks for the laugh! š
August 21, 2013 at 8:30 pm
Yay I’m glad some cheeky person got a giggle out of this! And even with three kids I can find better things to spend $2000 on!
August 21, 2013 at 9:31 pm
Given that licking the beaters is one of my main reasons to bake, any appliance that doesn’t allow me to make myself a little ill with a whoe lot of sugary batter is out for me š
Thanks for the laugh – I was loud enough that I had hubby looking over to see what the fuss was about.
August 21, 2013 at 9:59 pm
I often end up with 12 biscuits instead of 24 as I love raw batter, always have!!! And yay for making the hubby look up š thanks for visit and comment x
August 21, 2013 at 9:35 pm
Good on you Em – Thermomix free here and shall remain so for the foreseeable mortgaged future. Zucchinis really are so great. Carrot is ok in some things but that pesky orange colour can be a giveaway. I make a lasagne (when I can be bothered) that has tomato, capsicum, onion and celery in the meat sauce (chicken mince), a layer of pumpkin and sweet potato mash, and a layer of spinach and zucchini with ricotta cheesy sauce. It seems to pass muster.
August 21, 2013 at 9:58 pm
That sounds very muster worthy indeed! Carrots do give me away but a friend told me she puts cauliflower in as well, not cupcakes but spag Bol – I’m willing to try xx
August 21, 2013 at 11:54 pm
Way to hide sneaky vegetables Em! Awesome idea. I like the old school tools as well (but I have to say that because I can’t afford a thermomix…)
August 25, 2013 at 8:46 pm
Me either, they are very expensive, especially for how much I cook! Old school rocks x
August 22, 2013 at 12:54 am
I’ve had the same electric beater for practically my entire married life (30 years this year), and it has made a mountain of fairy cakes and pancake mixes in it’s time. I used to have boxes of fancy electrical goods taking over my kitchen cupboards, but never used them, so gave everything but my liquidiser away, and use that, and my electric hand beater, for everything – I figure, if it ain’t broke, why fix it? š
August 22, 2013 at 7:50 pm
I know what you mean, often less is
more, my mum has had her kitchen appliances for about the same time ! They don’t make them like they used to – thanks for visit š
August 23, 2013 at 4:32 pm
I’m with you Em – what the heck is all this fuss about thermomixes – they cost too much in my opinion, for that price, they’d have to wash themselves up, tidy the kitchen, sweep and mop the floors as well – AT THE VERY LEAST!!!
August 25, 2013 at 8:41 pm
HA HA – true that – and they would also have to do the DISHES!!
August 29, 2013 at 9:29 am
There’s nothing like using a hand-held mixer to make you feel alive!
August 29, 2013 at 8:51 pm
Ha ha how right you are!
